METHODS

     â€‹CRYSTALLINE PORCELAIN

CRYSTALLINE PORCELAIN WARE ARE HAND THROWN ON THE WHEEL USING A PURE, WHITE,

PORCELAIN CLAY KNOWN AS HELIOS. AFTER DRYING, THE WARE IS BISQUE  FIRED, (A LOW TEMPERATURE FIRING TO STRENGTHEN THE CLAY).THE PIECES ARE  THEN GLAZED WITH ZINC OXIDE BASED GLAZES.

THE PIECES ARE  RAPIDLY FIRED TO CONE TEN, (2345 F), THEN SLOWLY COOLED.  THE CRYSTAL FORMATIONS

TAKE PLACE DURING THE COOLING PHASE.  SLIGHT VARIATIONS IN THE GLAZE FORMULAS AND THE FIRING CYCLES CAN PRODUCE DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT RESULTS.  ALL CRYSTALLINE  IS  ARTISTIC, AND IS NON- FUNCTIONAL.

RAKU

RAKU ORIGINATED IN THE FAR EAST.   THE METHOD HAS BEEN ADOPTED IN THE WEST  AND IS KNOW AS  WESTERN STYLE RAKU.

THE PIECES ARE HAND THROWN ON THE WHEEL USING A CLAY DESIGNED TO STAND UP TO THE RIGORS OF RAKU FIRING.

AFTER DRYING, THE PIECES ARE BISQUE FIRED, THE PIECES ARE THEN GLAZED, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF  THE HORSEHAIR PIECES.  ON HORSEHAIR PIECE, FOUR COATS OF A VERY, FINE CLAY SOLUTION KNOWN AS TERRA SIGILLATA  ARE  BRUSHED ONTO THE CLAY.  THIS PRODUCES A VERY SMOOTH AND SHINY SURFACE.  THE PIECES ARE THEN FIRED IN A 'RAKU' KILN TO A TEMPERATURE RANGE OF 1500 TO 1900 F.. AFTER FIRING THE GLAZED WARE IS IMMEDIATELY PLACED IN A REDUCTION CHAMBER LINED WITH COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL, (SUCH AS A METAL TRASHCAN LINED ON THE BOTTOM WITH NEWSPAPER OR SAWDUST).. THE CHAMBER IS THEN TIGHTLY COVERED.  THIS RESULTS  IN  THE REDUCTION OF OXYGEN AND PRODUCES  THE DRAMATIC GLAZE RESULTS FOUND WITH RAKU.  WITH HORSEHAIR RAKU, IMMEDIATELY AFTER FIRING, ACTUAL HORSEHAIR IS PLACED ON THE PIECES. THIS PRODUCES THE ABSTRACT CHARCOAL DESIGNS FOR WHICH HORSEHAIR RAKU IS KNOWN.

ALL RAKU IS ARTISTIC AND IS NON- FUNCTIONAL.

STONEWARE

STONEWARE IS HAND THROWN USING A WIDE VARIETY OF CLAYS.  AFTER BISQUE FIRING,, THE PIECES ARE GLAZED

AND  FIRED TO A MID-RANGE IN EITHER A GAS OR ELECTRIC KILN.   STONEWARE  CAN BE   FUNCTIONAL..OR NON FUNCTIONAL.

FUNCTIONAL ITEMS ARE FOOD SAFE.
